Nylon 6: Specialist Grades

Nylon 6

Nylon 6 is a semi-crystalline polyamide (PA) with high mechanical strength, stiffness, hardness and toughness. In addition to this, it also has excellent wear resistance as well as good fatigue resistance, sliding properties and machinability. Whilst these properties make Nylon 6 a great all-round engineering thermoplastic, Quadrant EPP have developed a range of specialist Nylon 6 products, which are an improvement on the standard grade of Nylon 6.

Many of Quadrant’s specialist Nylons have been developed for specific applications with additional ingredients added to provide enhanced properties such as lubricity or wear resistance.

Ertalon® 6 XAU+

Material characterisation: heat stabilised cast polyamide 6 (PA6); colour black.

Ertalon® 6 XAU+ is a heat stabilized cast nylon grade with a very dense and highly crystalline structure. Compared with conventional extruded or cast nylons, Ertalon® 6 XAU+ offers superior heat aging performance in air (much better resistance to thermal-oxidative degradation), allowing 15 - 30 °C higher continuously allowable service temperatures. Ertalon® 6 XAU+ is particularly recommended for bearings and other mechanical parts subject to wear which are operating in air for long periods of time at temperatures over 60 °C.

Ertalon® LFX

Material characterisation: cast polyamide 6 + oil (PA6); colour green.

Ertalon® LFX is a self-lubricating cast Nylon 6 especially developed for unlubricated, highly loaded and slowly moving parts applications. It yields a considerable enlargement of the application opportunities compared to standard cast nylons. It offers a reduced coefficient of friction (up to 50% lower), considerably increasing the pressure-velocity capabilities, and a vastly improved wear resistance (up to 10 times better).

Nylatron® NSM

Materials characterisation: cast polyamide 6 + solid lubricants (PA6); colour grey.

Nylatron® NSM contains solid lubricant additives which grant this cast Nylon 6 material self-lubricity, excellent frictional behaviour, superior wear resistance and outstanding pressure-velocity capabilities (up to 5 times higher than conventional cast nylons). Being particularly suited for higher velocity, unlubricated moving parts applications, it is the perfect complement to the oil-filled grade Ertalon® LFX.

Nylatron® MC901

Materials characteristics: modified cast polyamide 6 (PA6); colour blue.

Nylatron® MC901 is a modified cast nylon 6 grade with a distinctive blue colour which exhibits higher toughness, flexibility and fatigue resistance than standard Nylon 6 grade. It has proven to be an excellent material for gear wheels, racks and pinions.

Nylatron® GSM

Material characteristics: cast polyamide 6 + molybdenum disulphide (PA6-MD (MoS₂)); colour grey-black.

Nylatron® GSM contains finely divided particles of molybdenum disulphide to enhance its bearing and wear behaviour without impairing the impact and fatigue resistance inherent to unmodified cast nylon grades. It is a very commonly used grade for gears, bearings, sprockets and sheaves.

Nylatron® 703 XL

Material characteristics: cast polyamide 6 + internal lubricants (PA6); colour purple.

Nylatron® 703 XL is a high-performance cast nylon 6 bearing grade which provides an even better wear resistance than Nylatron® NSM, is combined with superior pressure-velocity capabilities and is an industry first: it has a near zero level of "stick-slip". The elimination of stick-slip, mostly associated with chatter or squeaking, provides an extraordinary amount of motion control for high-precision applications.

Nylatron® MD

Material characteristics: polyamide 6 + metal detectable additive (PA6); colour dark blue.

Nylatron® MD contains a metal detectable additive and has been specifically tailored for use in the food processing and packaging industries where it can easily be traced by the conventional metal detection systems installed to detect contamination of the foodstuffs (result may vary depending on the sensitivity of the metal detection system used). Nylatron® MD presents good mechanical strength, stiffness, impact strength and wear resistance; it also features a food contact compliant composition and is available as a "Food Grade".
